Pima's No. 1 singles and doubles player Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) earned a tiebreaker victory in her singles match to win 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) as the Aztecs beat No. 21 Mesa Community College 8-1. They beat Eastern Arizona College, who was also ranked last week. The Aztecs are 2-0 on the season.

The Pima Community College women’s tennis team (2-0, 2-0 in ACCAC) upset its second ranked opponent as it nearly blanked No. 21 Mesa Community College on Tuesday at the West Campus Tennis Courts. The Aztecs defeated the Thunderbirds 8-1. Read more»

Sophomore Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) (foreground) and freshman Ashley Fitzsimmons (Walden Grove HS) rallied from a 2-5 deficit to win at No. 3 doubles 9-8 (7-3 in tiebreaker). They also won their singles matches at No. 6 and No. 5 respectively. The Aztecs upset No. 13 Eastern Arizona College 5-4 to open the 2018 season.

Pima women's tennis coach Gretchen Schantz will resign at the end of June after spending 11 years as head coach. She's set to become the new Director of Tennis at the Tucson Racquet Club. Schantz went 95-48 at Pima. She was selected ITA National JUCO Coach of the Year in 2013 and a three-time ACCAC Coach of the Year.

Pima men's tennis coach Brian Ramirez decided to resign earlier this month. He compiled a 12-19 overall record in four years at Pima. In 2014, his team took second place at the NJCAA Region I Championships.

She will play Agustina Grimolizzi from North Central Texas College on Wednesday morning. Pima finished the day with 12.5 and remain in 15th place out of 24 teams.

Freshman Fernanda Miller was one of three Pima women's tennis players to win a match in the round of 32. She defeated Jewel Ellis from the New Mexico Military Institute 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16. The Aztecs went 5-1 in the first day of competition.
