Pima Community College Interim Athletic Director Jim Monaco was named to the permanent position. In the last 23 months as the Interim Athletic Director, he has helped in creating partnerships with Chapman Automotive and Adidas as well as revitalize the West Campus field with lights and a new scoreboard.

The Aztecs women's basketball team had the highest team GPA (3.36) among the Pima teams and also had the highest GPA in NJCAA Region I. Six Pima Athletic programs were named NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year on Thursday.

New Aztecs cross country co-head coach and track & field assistant coach Alfred Shirley was elected to the ACCAC Conference Hall of Fame on Wednesday. He coached at Central Arizona College from 1998-2013 earning 13 team national championships. He was named to the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2016.

Former Aztecs football running back Sirgeo Hoffman signed a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals. He played for Pima in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Following his time at Pima, he played at Portland State University.

Former Aztecs football NJCAA All-American wide receiver Jeff Cotton (Mountain View HS) signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday. Cotton played for the Aztecs in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. He caught 43 passes for 837 yards and six touchdowns in 2016.

The Pima Aztecs softball program added former University of Arizona pitcher Taylor McQuillin to its coaching staff on Sunday. McQuillin helped lead the Wildcats to their first Women's College World Series since 2010. She will assist Pima pitching coach Nicki Johnson.

The Pima Community College football team will head to their second bowl game in program history. The Aztecs will head to the C.H.A.M.P.S Heart of Texas Bowl in Waco, TX on Dec. 1 to play Kilgore College. It will be the second time the two teams will face off in a bowl game.

Freshman Jake Smith had a game-saving blocked field goal in the final seconds as the Aztecs upset No. 9 Eastern Arizona College 28-26 in their final home game at Kino North Stadium. The Aztecs improved to 6-1 overall.

Quarterback Justin Martin (Pueblo HS) will return for his sophomore year next season. The Aztecs open the 2017 season at nationally ranked Trinity Valley Community College on Saturday Aug. 26. The football team will hold its spring scrimmage tomorrow at the West Campus track.

Max Shepherd was named the TEP Aztec Power Player of the Week after he had four tackles and a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in Pima's 34-17 loss at Mesa. Pima finished the season 3-8.
