While back-to-school costs are expected to rise for families this year, overall spending is expected to be down slightly from last year, as there are fewer students going back to school. It is still projected to be a healthy $26.5 billion, however.

Families will spend an average of $669 on back-to-school shopping this year, with just more than $100 for school supplies alone, the National Retail Federation predicts, as strapped schools and teachers ask parents to pitch in.
