With not a single contested race on the ballot, combined with Tucson's vote-by-mail system, primary day was about as anti-climactic as an election can possibly be. Three GOP candidates for the Tucson City Council filed nominating petitions Wednesday afternoon, the final day to turn in signatures to gain a place on the August primary ballot. Bill Hunt in Ward 1, Kelly Lawton in Ward 2 and Margaret Burkholder in Ward 4 handed in their paperwork to challenge incumbent Democrats Regina Romero, Paul Cunningham and Shirley Scott. Read more»

A frequent speaker at Tucson City Council meetings wants to make a leap into the mayor's seat: art gallery owner Robert Reus has filed to run as a GOP candidate. A Democrat during a 2007 primary with Rodney Glassman, Reus didn't inform GOP headquarters before declaring his candidacy, party officials said. Read more»
