Arizona has some of the least restrictive gun laws in the nation, built on a pioneer, conservative ethos of Second Amendment rights. That has meant most Arizona adults can openly carry weapons into many public and private spaces. Arizona also is the hub of a national gun-reform group, the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, named after U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, who was gravely injured in a mass shooting outside a Tucson grocery store in 2011. There were more people killed by firearms than by motor vehicles in Arizona in 2011, the third year in a row, according to a new study. Voters on Tuesday approved a ballot measure aimed at protecting crime victims from being sued by someone harmed while committing or fleeing from the scene of a felony. Unofficial returns showed Proposition 114 leading by a wide margin.

Supporters of Proposition 114 argue that people who commit a felony cannot sue the victims involved. The measure would amend Arizona's Constitution, which currently bars laws limiting the right to sue for death or injury. Opponents of the proposition expect it to pass in November. ... Read more»
