Lady Aztecs fall to Quest Prep; Williams receives Bruce Fleck Award
For the second straight night, the Pima Community College women’s basketball team (7-7) found themselves in a fight but in the end, a last second shot did in the Aztecs as they lost 77-76 to Quest Preparatory (NV) on Tuesday. The game marked the second day of action in the Bruce Fleck Classic at the West Campus.
Pima trailed 73-69 late in the second half when Melody McLaughlin (Marana Mountain View HS) hit a three-pointer to make it 73-72. After a Quest Prep turnover, she put the Aztecs ahead after grabbing an offensive rebound. Quest Prep took the lead once again at 75-74 after a pair of made free throws with 57 seconds left. After another Quest Prep turnover, the Aztecs responded when Alicia Jones (Palo Verde HS) scored under the basket with 10.8 second left to make it 76-75. A running shot from the right side of the free throw line sealed the win for Quest Prep as time expired. The game featured 18 lead changes and 17 ties.
Jones led the way for the Aztecs with 16 points. McLaughlin finished with 15 points and six rebounds while Felicia Foster (Peoria HS) contributed with 12 points.
During halftime, Rachel Williams (Cesar Chavez HS) was presented with the Bruce Fleck Scholarship Award. Williams is the third recipient of this award. Named in honor of the late coach, the award goes to a women’s basketball player who best exemplifies work in the classroom as well as on and off the court. IWilliams received a book scholarship, an individual plaque and her name displayed in the gym of previous recipients. Nadi Carey received the award in 2011 and Alyssa Roche was the recipient in 2012.
“Rachel embodies everything Bruce stood for and represented,” Pima coach Todd Holthaus said.
