Moreno-Ross hit game-winning free throw in Pima win

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (7-6) had to recover from a rough first half and a diminished lead in the second half but the Aztecs defeated Gillette College (WY) 65-64 in the first day of the Bruce Fleck Classic.

With eight seconds left in the game, Julia Cooper (Catalina Foothills HS) in-bounded the ball to Raja Moreno-Ross (Tucson Magnet HS) inside the paint, where she drew a foul. She missed her first free throw and Gillette called timeout, but the move didn’t ice Moreno-Ross as she nailed the second free throw. A final shot attempt missed the mark, which ended the game.

The Aztecs fell behind in the first half as Gillette College dominated the glass to take a 31-21 lead at halftime. Gillette’s biggest lead would come early in the second half at 33-21 but the Aztecs chipped away. Down 41-35, Pima went on an 11-1 run to take a 46-42 lead and later an 8-1 run to take one of their biggest leads of the night at 54-45. The margin was match later when Rachel Williams (Cesar Chavez HS) hit a three-pointer to make it 57-48 but Gillette came back to tie the game at 62-62 with 1:29 left and again at 64-64.

Alicia Jones (Palo Verde HS) hit four 3-pointers for the game; three in the second half to finish with a game-high 21 points. Williams hit three 3-pointers for the game and also hit two crucial free throws to put Pima up 64-62. She was 4 for 4 from the free-throw line finishing with 19 points. Moreno-Ross had 12 points and 15 rebounds.

The Aztecs will play Quest Academy of Preparatory Education (NV) Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the West Campus in the second day of the Bruce Fleck Classic.
