Tucson park fields to close for seasonal repairs

A number of athletic fields at Tucson parks will be temporarily closed this fall and winter for aerating, fertilizing and re-seeding, and to allow for turf growth. From September through February, a total of 23 fields will be closed in six parks.

The first fields to be closed for maintenance will be the four baseball fields at Reid Park, beginning Sept. 21. They'll reopen in February.

The work will give the turf "time to heal and grow in preparation for spring sports activities," said city spokeswoman Sierra Davenport.

"The weather in Tucson affords us the great opportunity to play sports year-round," said Mike Hayes, deputy director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

But the heavy use of the fields means they need to "recover and rejuvenate during the fall months," Hayes said.

The closures are staggered so that they will not occur all at once.
