Padres win 3-2 on 2-run walk-off single
Mike Wilson's two-run, walk-off single in the ninth capped off a 3-2 come-from-behind victory for the Tucson Padres over the Las Vegas 51s Friday at Kino Stadium. The Padres are now a team-best nine games over .500 and lead the Southern Division by 2.5 games.
Las Vegas jumped ahead 1-0 with one out in the top of the first when Ruben Tejada scored on wild pitch. Zach Lutz's two-out single in the third drove in Mike Baxter from second base to extend the 51s lead to 2-0.
The Padres got on the board in the seventh when Rene Rivera lined a leadoff home run over the left field wall. Tucson had a chance for more runs in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, but Robert Carson was able to come in and force Cody Decker to fly out to center to end the threat.
Daniel Robertson started off the ninth inning rally with a walk and later advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jaff Decker. Gregorio Petit's single to left moved Robertson to third, while Petit took second base on an error by Brian Bixler. Two batters later, Wilson stepped to the plate with two outs and two strikes and sent a single to right bringing home Robertson and Petit to win the game.
The Padres bullpen of Jorge Reyes, Tommy Layne and Brad Boxberger kept Tucson in the game by tossing six scoreless innings, allowing only one hit during that time. Boxberger earned the win, while Justin Hampson was charged with the loss after surrendering the walk-off hit in the ninth. Las Vegas starter Matt Fox pitched six shutout innings with three strikeouts, while Tucson's Ryan Kelly allowed three hits, two runs and three walks in three innings.
