Arizona to host softball regional, swinging for 9th title
Quest for another NCAA championship begins at home
The University of Arizona will host an NCAA Softball Championships Regional Friday through Sunday at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
Teams in the region are at-large selection Texas Tech from the Big 12; Harvard University, Ivy League champion; WAC Champion New Mexico State and Arizona, an at-large selection. Arizona is the lone national seed in the region, at No. 8 overall.
Game times Friday feature Texas Tech vs. New Mexico State at 4 p.m., followed by Harvard vs. Arizona at 6:30 p.m.
The winners will meet Saturday in game three at 2 p.m. followed by game four featuring Friday's losers at 4:30 p.m. The loser of game three and winner of game four play at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Sunday's regional championship begins at 12 p.m. with the if necessary game at 2 p.m.
Arizona is making its 25th consecutive appearance in the NCAAs, dating to 1987, which was head coach Mike Candrea's second year in Tucson. Candrea has won 22 regionals and eight national championships.
Arizona has been an initial-rounds site 15 times, and hosted super regionals five times. If the bracket holds up as seeded the Cats would stay home for super regional action as well where they would meet ninth-seeded Oklahoma.
