Aztec baseball season ends after game three loss at South Mountain

The Pima Community College baseball team (34-25) fell behind early in game three of their Region I, Division I semifinal series. The Aztecs rallied but could not stop No. 2 South Mountain’s offense in the late innings in a 7-2 loss on Saturday.

The No. 3-seeded Aztecs cut South Mountain’s lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning, but the Cougars scored one in the seventh and three in the eighth. Down 3-0 with the bases loaded and two outs, Jesse Robles (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a two-run RBI single to bring in Cooper Smith (Canyon del Oro HS) and Jorge Maldonado Jr. (Nogales HS). Smith had singled with one out and Maldonado drew a walk to reach base with two outs. Robles finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs while Smith went 1 for 3 and Maldonado was 1 for 2 with two walks. The Aztecs’ offense had seven hits and five walks for the game.

Starting pitcher Scotty Watson (Empire HS) pitched one inning, giving up three runs (two earned) with three walks. Ben Skuro (Sabino HS) pitched five shutout innings in relief for the Aztecs, giving up three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Marcel Renteria (Nogales HS) struggled as he pitched one and one-third innings, giving up four runs (four earned) with one strikeout and one walk. Cole Plouck (Empire HS) closed out the last two-third innings with one hit and one strikeout.

This was the third appearance in four years for the Aztecs in the Region I, Division I playoffs.
