Error hurts Aztecs in game 1 loss in regional tourney
The Pima Community College baseball team (33-24) fell behind early and could not recover in game one of the Region I, Division I semifinals on Thursday.
The No. 3-seeded Aztecs gave up three runs on a throwing error in the first inning. The team's offense couldn’t find a rhythm in their 8-2 loss at No. 2 South Mountain Community College.
With the bases loaded, the Aztecs had a throwing error to first base that cleared the bases and put South Mountain up 3-0. Down 7-0 in the eighth inning, the Aztecs got on the board when Devon Carrillo hit an RBI single to bring in Dan Kennon. Two batters later, Kellen Marruffo (Sabino HS) hit an RBI single to score A.J. Acosta (Douglas HS). The Aztecs had six hits for the game as Carrillo and Acosta each finished 2 for 4.
Cole Plouck (Empire HS) took the loss as he pitched five and one-third innings, giving up five runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Chris Kucko (Sahuarita HS) pitched one and two-third innings in relief, giving up three runs (three earned) on five hits with two strikeouts. Ben Skuro (Sabino HS) pitched the final inning, giving up two hits with one strikeout and one walk.
The second game of the best-of-three series will be at South Mountain on Friday at 3 p.m.
