Marruffo & Plouck named All-Conference; Pima seeded third

The Pima Community College baseball team received some recognition from the ACCAC conference on Monday as the Aztecs prepare to travel to Phoenix for the Region I, Division I semifinals beginning on Thursday.

Sophomore first baseman Kellen Marruffo (Sabino HS) was named First Team All-ACCAC conference. He finished the regular season playing in 54 of the 56 games with a .341 batting average. He led the team with 63 hits, 42 RBIs and 91 total bases. Marruffo also had three triples, four home runs and 26 walks on the year.

Sophomore pitcher Cole Plouck (Empire HS) was selected Second Team All-ACCAC conference. The ace led the team with 81.2 innings pitched, four complete-games, 76 strikeouts and a 1.43 ERA. Plouck started 13 games this season, made 18 total appearances on the mound and compiled a 4-4 record.

The Aztecs lost 18-2 and won 16-1 in its final regular season doubleheader at South Mountain Community College on Saturday. The Aztecs will head right back to South Mountain for the semifinals of the Region I, Division I Tournament in a best-of-three series. The No. 3 seeded Aztecs will play the No. 2 seeded Cougars on Thursday at 3 p.m. The second game will be Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday’s game will be played at noon if necessary.

The Aztecs have reached the playoffs three of the last four years. Yavapai College and Central Arizona College are the only other ACCAC teams to make the playoffs in that stretch. The Aztecs were a No. 4 seed in 2011and in 2012 they appeared as a No. 3 seed.
