Pima baseball halts rallies, sweeps Az Western

The Pima Community College baseball team (24-28-1, 14-22 in conference) halted a couple of rallies in a doubleheader at Arizona Western College on Tuesday in Yuma as the Aztecs snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Aztecs scored two runs in the fifth inning to give themselves a cushion and went on to defeat Arizona Western 4-2 in seven innings in the first game. Arizona Western scored one run each in the fifth and six innings.

Zach Schira (Marcos de Niza HS) hit an RBI double to score Alec Beyersdorf (Catalina Foothills HS) in the fifth inning. Schira would score the second run in the inning after an RBI single by Juan Gamez (Cienega HS). Schira also had an RBI single in the first inning and finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored for the game. Beyersdorf was a perfect 4 for 4 with a run scored. He hit three doubles for the game. Gamez went 2 for 4 and had an RBI and a run scored.

Cole Plouck (Empire HS) got the win on the mound (2-2) after pitching four innings giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Keith Zuniga (Nogales HS) pitched in relief, going three innings giving up one run (none earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

In the second game, the Aztecs scored four runs in the sixth inning and stopped a late rally in the ninth by Arizona Western to win 7-4. The Matadors scored all four of their runs in the ninth inning.

Alvaro Flores (Tech. Institute of Monterrey) led the offensive attack, reaching base on every at-bat for the Aztecs, as he hit an RBI triple in the second inning and later an RBI single in the fourth that scored Andre Porterfield (Sahuarita HS) to make it 2-0. Flores finished the game 4 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Cooper Smith (Canyon del Oro HS) hit an RBI single in the sixth inning that scored Beyersdorf. Schira, Beyersdorf and Porterfield each scored two runs for the game.

Jake Cole (Sahuaro HS) got the win after pitching 8 1/3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts and four walks. He threw 135 pitches and improved to 4-6 on the year. Will Holbrook (Sabino HS) finished the game giving up one run (none earned) on one hit with one strikeout.

The Aztecs will close out the regular season on Saturday when they host South Mountain Community College for a doubleheader at the West Campus. The first game will start at noon.
