Last shot falls short as Lady Aztecs' season ends at Mesa
The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (20-12) had a lead late in the second half but fell short in the end at No. 1 Mesa Community College on Thursday. The Aztecs lost 65-64 in the Region I, Division II Championship game.
Felicia Foster’s final shot fell short of the basket as time expired. The No. 2 Aztecs had a single-digit lead for much of the second half; Mesa took its first lead of the half at 53-51 with 5:33 left.
Down 58-56 with 1:22 left in the game, Holly Bolen (Tucson Magnet HS) drained a three-pointer to put Pima back up 59-58. Mesa tied it with a free throw but Foster came right back with a three-pointer of her own to give Pima a 62-59 lead with 47.2 seconds left.
Rachel Williams hit a pair of free throws to put Pima up 64-61 with 25.1 seconds left but Mesa hit two free throws and scored on an inbounds pass inside the paint to take the lead for good.
The Aztecs had lead 32-30 at halftime. They trailed 11-10 early but outscored Mesa 19-8 to take a 29-19 lead. Mesa ended the first half on a 7-0 run.
Alicia Jones (Palo Verde HS) led the way for the Aztecs with a double-double. She scored 12 of her 17 points in the first half and also had 11 rebounds. Raja Moreno-Ross had 12 points and nine rebounds while Foster finished with 12 points. Williams finished with 11 points and five assists off the bench.
This was the sixth straight year Pima and Mesa battled for the Region I, Division II title. This is the third straight year the Aztecs lost to them.
