McLaughlin nets 16 in 2nd half as Lady Aztecs advance
The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (20-11) advanced to the Region I, Division II championship game on Tuesday as they defeated No. 3 Chandler-Gilbert Community College 79-65.
The No. 2-seeded Aztecs will play at No. 1 Mesa Community College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. This will be the sixth year in a row the Aztecs and the Thunderbirds will have played each other in the playoffs. The Thunderbirds have won the last two meetings. The teams split the regular season series with each team getting the home victory.
With the game tied at 34-34 at the end of the first half, the Aztecs came out firing in the second half going on an 11-4 in four minutes to take a 45-38 lead. Melody McLaughlin (Mountain View HS) found her stride and scored seven straight points for Pima to help them take a 50-41 lead. Jayla Brown’s (Desert Vista HS) three-pointer gave the Aztecs their first double digit lead at 53-43. The biggest lead for the Aztecs came with 2:36 left in the game off a McLaughlin basket that put them up 76-58.
McLaughlin scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half as she finished 8 for 14 from the field. She also had six rebounds and four assists. Raja Moreno-Ross (Tucson Magnet HS) and Alicia Jones (Palo Verde HS) each had double-doubles for the game. Moreno-Ross had 17 points and 12 rebounds while Jones finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Rachel Williams (Cesar Chavez HS) also finished the game in double figures with 12 points off the bench.
