Aztecs drop 1st game at Eastern AZ, 2nd game suspended

The Pima Community College baseball team (12-9, 6-2 in conference) played at Eastern Arizona College on Saturday in Thatcher but the second game was stopped due to the weather conditions. The game was 0-0 in the top of the fourth inning when it was called.

The Aztecs fell behind 3-0 early in the first game and came back in the fifth inning. The rally was cut short as the Aztecs lost 3-2. Dan Kennon and Devon Carrillo (Sahuaro HS) hit back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth inning but a fielder’s choice and a flyout ended the threat. Jorge Maldonado Jr. (Nogales HS) and Cooper Smith (Canyon del Oro HS) scored the runs for Pima. Kennon finished 2 for 4 and Carrillo went 3 for 4. The 3 through 6 batters in the lineup for the Aztecs combined to go 0 for 12.

Pitcher Cole Plouck (Empire HS) took the loss (1-1) as he threw five innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits with seven strikeouts and four walks on 106 pitches. He surrendered all three runs in the second inning.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Tuesday when they host a conference doubleheader against Central Arizona College. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
