Aztecs baseball splits against Mesa
The Pima Community College baseball team (10-8, 4-2 in conference) rallied to take the first game against Mesa Community College but couldn’t stop their offense in the second contest on Saturday at the West Campus.
Cooper Smith (Canyon del Oro HS) had the game-winning hit in the sixth inning, scoring Steven Still (Ironwood Ridge HS) as the Aztecs came from behind to beat Mesa in the first game 3-2.
Down 2-1 in the sixth inning, Kellen Marruffo (Sabino HS) hit a single to right field that scored Jorge Maldonado Jr. (Nogales HS) to tie the game and Smith’s hit followed to put Pima up for good.
Mesa had runners on first and third base with one out in the seventh inning but the Aztecs got a runner out at home plate and a groundout to third base ended the game.
Juan Gamez (Cienega HS) tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning with a flyout RBI that scored Marruffo from third base. Marruffo finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Cole Plouck (Empire HS) threw four and two-third innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Ethan Rosebeck (Cienega HS) came in for relief and got the win (2-0) giving up one hit in two and one-third innings of work.
In the second game, Mesa got on the scoreboard early and the Aztecs fell 9-3.
Mesa scored three runs in the first inning off Marcel Renteria (Nogales HS), who went three and two-third innings while giving up four runs (one earned) off five hits with two strikeouts and four walks. He took the loss and dropped to 2-2 on the year.
The Aztecs got the board in the fourth inning when Marruffo hit a groundout that scored James Lynch to make it 4-1. Still drove in two runs in the eighth inning and finished 2 for 4 in the game. Devon Carrillo (Sahuaro HS) went 2 for 5 with a run scored.
The Aztecs will host Phoenix College in a conference doubleheader at the West Campus on Tuesday. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
