Wildcats baste Ducks 70-57

Williams' scoring burst keys UA

A quick start in the second half by freshman Derrick Williams was just what the Arizona men’s basketball team needed Thursday night to pull away from Oregon and end a two-game losing streak.

The Wildcats opened a three-game homestand with a 70-57 win over the Ducks to stay in a tie for second place in the Pacific-10 Conference at 7-5, one game behind California. The Cats host Oregon State on Saturday. UA is 13-11 overall.

Williams scored 11 straight points to start the second half to help UA stretch an eight-point lead to 18 at 47-29. UA had its biggest lead at 19 after a 3-pointer by MoMo Jones made it 52-33.

Williams finished with 20 points. Nic Wise had 12 and Jones finished with 11.

The Wildcats played well in transition, worked the ball inside and limited the Ducks to 38.6 percent shooting from the field.
