Soccer: Seattle drops one to Timbers
Improvised lineup puts up fight, but falls to Portland
The day didn't start out well for Seattle Sounders FC while on their way to Tuesday morning's preseason match at Kino Sports Park. Several players were out with an illness, and their bus from Casa Grande ran into a traffic jam. Despite Seattle keeping it even for the first hour of play, the game ended with Portland Timbers FC vanquishing their biggest rivals 1- 0.
Illnesses meant that many Sounders were playing out of position. Both teams played to a nil-nil draw, with credit going to Sounders and former U.S. national team keeper Marcus Hahnemann for several saves.
The Timbers had a planned change-up just past the hour mark, and as if to prove himself while he still had some seconds left, French trialist Mikaël Silvestre took a rebound that hadn't been cleared and shot it past Sounders second half keeper Josh Ford.
A Seattle attempt in the waning minutes of the game nearly brought them level, but the match ended with Portland up by the only goal of the match.
Seattle's next preseason match will be in Tucson against the New England Revolution on the13th to open the Desert Diamond Cup. Portland's next match will be against FC Tucson on Friday, at Kino Sports Park.
