Soccer: Tucson's Toia makes debut for San Jose
Whitecaps drown Dynamo, Colorado knows way over San Jose
Colorado Rapids 1 - San Jose Earthquakes 0
In the final game of Colorado's stay in Tucson, they notched a victory over San Jose in a midday game on Saturday at Kino Sports Park.
Colorado was not without chances, with Gilbert-born Tony Cascio getting a shot in the 27th minute. But neither the Rapids nor the Quakes were able to score in the first half.
In the second half, fourth-year Rapid Andre Akpan crossed the ball to former Celtic FC winger Jamie Johnson, who calmly one-touched it into the goal. Interestingly, Johnson's option has not been picked up this season, but he continues to train with the team.
The second half of the match also featured Tucson's Donny Toia. The Canyon del Oro graduate played wide left for the Earthquakes.
San Jose is returning to California and will resume their preseason on Wednesday in a match against the Chicago Fire in Santa Barbara. Colorado decamps to Las Vegas for matches against UNLV and Chivas USA on Feb. 14 and 15.
Houston Dynamo 1 - Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2
MLS Cup runner up Houston Dynamo took an early lead but was unable to hold it as they fell to the Whitecaps in the late game at Kino Sports Park on Saturday.
Bobby Boswell opened the scoring for Houston in the 30th minute. The lead didn't hold long when Jamaican Darren Mattocks scored the first for the Caps minutes later.
Corey Herzog got the game winner for the Whitecaps in the second half. Interestingly, Herzog scored the first goal ever for an MLS team in Tucson while a player for the New York Red Bulls back in 2011. He notched one against FC Tucson in that year's Desert Cup opening match.
Vancouver continues its stay in Arizona with a match on Monday against the Arizona Sahuaros in Casa Grande. Houston packs their Orange jerseys and will return home before competing in the preseason Carolina Challenge Cup later this month.
