Lady Aztecs use defensive stops to halt Cochise College
The No. 14-ranked Pima Community College women’s basketball team (10-7, 6-3 in conference) found themselves down by double figures early in the second half but rallied and with stops on defense defeated Cochise College 59-57 on Wednesday. The Aztecs are in Division II and Cochise is Division I.
The Aztecs were outscored 11-4 in the first six minutes of the second half, held in Douglas. They trailed 37-26 with 14 minutes left in the game but countered with a 14-2 run capped off by Jayla Brown’s (Desert Vista HS) three-pointer to put them up 42-39. Later in the half, Cochise retook the lead with a 14-4 run of its own to make it 57-53 with 1:51 left. Cochise would not score the rest of the half.
Brown hit another three-pointer to make it 57-56 with 1:28 left. After some stops on defense, Alicia Jones (Palo Verde HS) hit two free throws to put the Aztecs up 58-57 and give them the lead for good. They stymied Cochise with a few stops on the defensive end and Raja Moreno-Ross (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a free throw to help seal it.
Brown, Jones and Moreno-Ross each scored 13 points to lead the Aztecs.
“Huge road win for the girls,” Pima coach Todd Holthaus said.
The Aztecs will have another road test against a Division I team when they travel to play in Yuma against Arizona Western College on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
