On Tuesday the Council certified Paul Cunningham and Shirley Scott the "winners." How do you do that when the rules determining that are unconstitutional? When the Supreme Court makes a 5-4 decision about a matter of law it is sometimes dismissed as a split decision but it is still the law of the land. Checks and balances. A term most every elementary school student understands. But it seems to be a principle that escapes too many in government. Chuck Huckleberry will soon propose the purchase of new election equipment for the county. The problem is the proposal will do away with a precinct scanner at each polling location. I was troubled by the passage of SB 1062 this week. As a life-long Republican I am concerned that the practical consequences of your signature on this bill will have for folks of all political beliefs for many years to come. I happen to be gay. I am also a conservative with a libertarian bent. Frankly I find those in the Legislature who pushed this seemed to be searching for a solution to a problem that hadn't presented itself yet.
