I remember watching on TV a caisson rolling through the streets, carrying a coffin draped with an American flag. But it wasn't until I saw the riderless horse with boots reversed in the stirrups that it began to dawn on me that something really out of the ordinary had taken place. I knew about horses — Western heroes rode tall in the saddle, leaned forward into the danger, and never died. So why was this horse without a rider? This wasn't right.
