Gantiarabriela: Politics (and xenophobia)

Get Van Morrison on the phone – according to Gabby "I'm On the Inside Now, So Let's Lock The Door" Mercer, his "Brown Eyed Girl" was probably a Middle Eastern terrorist spy.

Arizona congressional hopeful Gabriela Saucedo Mercer is, as a Republican, "tough" on immigration, though she is herself an immigrant. In an interview with a conservative website last year, she said:

"If you know Middle Easterners, a lot of them, they look Mexican or they look, you know, like a lot of people in South America, dark skin, dark hair, brown eyes - and they mix. They mix in. And those people, their only goal in life is to cause harm to the United States. So why do we want them here, either legally or illegally?

"When they come across the border, besides the trash that they leave behind, the drug smuggling, the killings, the beheadings. I mean, you are seeing stuff. It’s a war out there," she said.

To paraphrase Kurtz, "The beheadings! The beheadings!"

Roberto De Vido is a communications consultant, writer, cartoonist and jack of many trades. The former chief of Tucson Sentinel’s East Asia Bureau, he now lives in California (make of that what you will).
