'A failure on all our parts.' Thousands of immigrant children wait in government shelters

A system intended to protect young immigrants while they wait for new homes has instead been overused, experts say, leading to prolonged stays in federal custody.

The public has largely stopped paying attention to what’s happening inside shelters and other facilities that house immigrant children, but the shelter system remains in place and as of earlier this week, more than 9,000 unaccompanied immigrant children were in custody.
