This editorial on local solutions to combat climate change’s horrific impact is extremely disappointing. Candidate Romero says not one word about the need for most Tucsonans to reduce the amount of animal food they eat every day.
Animal agriculture is one of the leading factors for climate change. How is it that Ms. Romero does not say a word about this in all her policy suggestions? Especially when we consider the huge wastefulness of water that is used to grow meat instead of plants, it is unfathomable to me that this point is not made by our soon to be new mayor of Tucson.
Our Democratic candidates need to speak about this issue. You need to have the courage to help Tucsonans know how their daily food choices are making climate change worse. There is no shortage of scientific evidence on how the continued practice of breeding and eating animals is implicated in climate change. The Eat Lancet report that came out recently is one candidate Romero should study and then advocate its implementation of strategies for Tucson.
Candidate Romero could also help Tucsonans get more healthy by demonstrating the linkages of eating a more plant-based diet with the prevention and reversal of many chronic diseases. Fighting climate change and getting healthy are mutually supportive goals. I urge Ms. Romero to rethink her discussion of climate change policy proposals and become a leader in speaking frankly to Tucsonans on the need to eat differently to save our planet and ourselves (not to mention the 6 million land/sea animals that are killed every 60 seconds for food). While everyone is not likely going to become a 100% plant-based eater, everyone can certainly greatly increase the amount of healthy plants they eat every day. This is one local act every Tucsonan can take to help alleviate the horrible impacts climate change will cause in our local communities and our next Tucson mayor should advocate for such a policy.
