Healthcare reform has done nothing to reform healthcare. Yes, it will make health insurance available to people who could not get it before, but the cost will be high in premium, out of pocket costs and lack of choice.
For instance, a 47 year old male in Pima country can get coverage though the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP), made possible through a provision in “Obamacare”, for $324 a month. Sounds good until you see the provisions. You have to go without insurance for 6 months to be accepted and some medications cost as much as $350 a month after a $500 deductible. Better then nothing? That depends on your income.
The major problem with healthcare is not the insurance companies, they are only a small part of it. The real issue lies with provider reimbursement AND the obesity trend in the United states. Neither of which were resolved in Obamacare.
So when the author of this article says in passing that Obamacare has “shortcomings”, he should spend more time highlighting them. Because, whether you are buying your insurance from Blue Cross or Uncle Sam, your outrage needs to be directed at the people and businesses that are profiting from the services we cannot afford. Not so much the insurance companies that pay for those services that we all access too frequently.
