Mexican reporter: 'They are killing journalists like flies'

Calls on U.S. colleagues: 'Don't abandon us'

As Mexican journalists become war reporters in their own country, Marcela Turati of Proceso made a plea to U.S. investigative reporters: "Don't abandon us." She told attendees of a journalism conference about reporters killed by drug cartels, "discarded in the street" like trash, and others who are abducted, tortured, and sometimes killed.

My God, Dylan…this needs to be sent to every major media outlet, every senator, every congressman, our PRESIDENT…these journalists need help.  The whole country needs our help.

@TucsonGirl,

It was a terribly moving speech -— please watch the whole video, if you have time — that underscores the need for a free press: without reporters, citizens can’t make informed decisions. There’s a reason cartels target reporters; the more people are in the dark, the more unchallenged they become.
