Mr. Porter is so far off the mark here it is ridiculous.
Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP) are two of the best options available. Not only are the premiums considerably lower for HDHP, (Up to 35% less expensive) but the premium savings can be saved in a pre-income tax account (HSA) and spent on claims if the policy holder gets sick or injured.
When did it become a bad idea to keep your money, instead of paying insurance company higher premiums?
Also Mr. Porter forgets that HDHP have a cap of how much you will spend if you get sick. Copay plans do not have this cap, because copays never stop.
If you have to take a couple of medications every month, you are paying 24 copays a year for those medications. Then if you get sick or injured, you have a deductible that has to be satisfied, in addition to the copays. Lots more to pay out then a HDHP with no tax savings too!
