Comments on What the Devil won't tell you

$8.5 billion in gaming later, how are tribes doing?

Meet the new chairman. Same as the old chairman.

Ned Norris, Jr., isn't the tribal chairman of the Tohono O'odham Nation anymore and it happened this week. What's that? First you heard of it? In ignoring what's going on on the rez, the media's missing a story for the ages.

And so glad the Star used so much front page real estate today to tell us 100 degree heat is upon us.
(And inside, they had a little piece about the T-O chairman election - glad they got a tip from the Sentinel.)

I’ve had these discussions with members of both the T-O nation, and the Pasqua-Yaqui nation. Here’s what I’ve pieced together from the information I’ve been given, and formed this non-expert opinion:

For the P-Y Nation, things around there have taken a massive upswing over the last 15 years. Better roads, a park, a library, last I heard they’re even building a mini-hospital out there. They sell houses to its members and their families for almost zero dollars, and they’ll pay for a college education any member who wants an education. Health and dental benefits are also on the Tribe. They even started up a low-power radio station. I spent my entire teenage years very close to P-Y borders, and I can tell you first hand that it is a night-and-day difference out there as compared to the 80’s and early 90’s.

The T-O, on the other hand, remains every bit as dilapidated and depressing as it ever has been, with no visible hope of any sort of improvement on their land or to their lifestyle.

The difference between the two is that the P-Y nation puts its profits into infrastructure and bettering its nation. The T-O, on the other hand, just splits up the profits from the casinos and send everyone a check, and presumably the members just do whatever they want with their money.
