Brick Wall: Pima College named least transparent in state

The Arizona Press Club has named Pima Community College the "winner" of the group's annual Brick Wall Award, given to the "most deceptive" government agency or official. Saying the school "has promised much but delivered little in the area of openness and transparency," the statewide group of journalists (I'm a member of the board of directors) announced the award Tuesday.

Excellent piece.

As this story states, the competition is quite fierce for the Brick Wall Award. I wonder if PCC is proud. That whole thing about increased transparency was just bullshit. One look at their personnel roster shows me that nothing is any different there than when I left.

...Pima pressured the Arizona Daily Star to remove the reporter covering the school from her beat.

This one I don’t blame PCC for. I blame the ADS. Were I running the ADS, there are MAAAAAAAANNNNNYYYY things I would do differently, including handling this situation. The correct way for the ADS to handle this situation would have been to say to PCC “You do not determine the personnel assignments here, I do. And, I am happy with the reporter’s work and have no intention to make a change. Your level of satisfaction with the reporter assigned is completely irrelevant to me and will not influence any of my decisions one way or the other. If you don’t want to be labeled as “deceptive”, then stop being deceptive.”

@Bret Linden,

You’re assuming that pressure was successful.

@Dylan Smith

The piece didn’t say as much, but it seemed to imply at least some level of success with the pressure. But, I still stand by what I said concerning how the ADS should have handled it.

This is a disturbing trend…don’t like it…do not like it one bit.
