Gamal Mubarak will not seek Egypt's presidency

Egypt state TV has reported that Gamal Mubarak, President Hosni Mubarak's son, will not seek the presidency.

Broadcaster al-Arabiya reported that Vice President Omar Suleiman said the younger Mubarak — long considered a possible heir to his father despite significant public opposition — was not looking to take over from the embattled president.

Mubarak said in an address to the nation Tuesday that he would complete his current term as head of state in order to restore stability in the country, but that he would not contest September elections.

Gamal Mubarak, 46, reportedly fled to London last Sunday with Hosni Mubarak's wife, Suzanne, and daughter, and over 100 suitcases as the protests continued unabated across Egypt.

Subsequent unconfirmed sightings of Gamal and his wife, who reportedly have a home in the British capital, were reported on Twitter and other social media.

On Wednesday, British officials denied rumors that Gamal Mubarak was in Britain.
