County attorney backs Uber promo to deter DUIs

The Pima County Attorney's Office is backing a promo by ride-booking service Uber that offers first-time riders $20 off their trip. Barbara LaWall said that she hopes "people will enjoy their holiday celebrations and also be responsible and take a free ride."

In addition to the credit — use the promo code "FREETRIP" when you sign up — existing users of the app can use "EGGNOGAZ" to enter to win a $100 credit for use on New Year's Eve (when rates will undoubtedly spike as closing bells ring at bars across the city).

"Some of the most dangerous days of the year on our roads are between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day," the county attorney said in a press release.

From the release:

MADD statistics show that every two minutes a person is injured in a drunk driving crash, and every day in America 28 people die from DUI crashes – one every 52 minutes – and more than 200 people a year are killed in DUI crashes in Arizona. No other crime in America presents such horrific statistics.

PCAO didn't spend any money on the Uber promo, a spokeswoman said.

"They are subsidizing all the expenses and there is no cost to PCAO at all," said Stephanie Coronado. " In addition, for every new rider they will donate $5 to the Arizona chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers."
