'Fill the Streetcar' with holiday toys Dec. 14
Help spread holiday cheer this season by dropping off new and unwrapped toys for children during the Regional Transportation Authority's annual Fill the Streetcar event on Friday, Dec. 14, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The Sun Link streetcar will be parked on 8th Street, just west of 4th Avenue, for easy toy drop-off. A life-size "Barbie" jeep, provided by the Whips 4 Days Car Club, will be on display, along with appearances from Santa and the Grinch.
The collected toys will be donated to Ramon's Miracle on 31st Street charity, which distributes toys to children from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. This year the charity is anticipating 15,000 children will attend the 48th annual toy distribution.
"We reached our goal last year of collecting 1,000 toys for Ramon's event, and we are challenging the community to help us top that amount with a collection of 1,200 toys," said RTA Executive Director Farhad Moghimi. "Businesses along the streetcar route help spread the word about the Fill the Streetcar event, and we greatly appreciate their support in reaching our goal."
"Riding the streetcar is a great way to get around to events, shopping, restaurants and even work," said Sun Link Interim Operations Manager Nelson Hall. "This toy drop-off event is a great way for people curious about the streetcar to stop down and get a look inside. Riding the streetcar is easy and offers a different perspective of our community, especially for first-time users."
Ramon's Miracle on 31st Street will hold its annual toy giveaway on Dec. 22 at the Casino del Sol AVA Amphitheater.
