CBP: 8 U.S. citizens arrested trying to smuggle Mexican nationals through checkpoints

Border Patrol agents stationed at checkpoints in the Tucson Sector arrested eight U.S. citizens in multiple incidents for their involvement in human smuggling attempts over the last week, authorities said.

On Thursday, Border Patrol agents at the checkpoint on Highway 83, north of Sonoita, arrested a U.S. citizen after a dog led them to the trunk, which held two men, suspected of being in the country without authorization, said a Border Patrol spokesman from the Tucson Sector.

Agents questioned the men, who said they did not know the trunk had an emergency release and feared for their safety while in the trunk, the spokesman said.

The next day, agents at the Interstate 19 checkpoint found two men in the trunk of a vehicle, suspected of being in the country without authorization. The driver, identified only as a U.S. citizen, was also arrested.

On Monday, agents working at the checkpoint on Highway 86, just west of Three Points arrested a U.S. citizen after agents found a Guatemalan man locked in the trunk of his Nissan Maxima.

Agents also discovered that the man's passenger was a Guatemalan boy, traveling as an unaccompanied minor.

On Tuesday, agents at a checkpoint near Casa Grande arrested three U.S. citizens for human smuggling after they discovered that another passenger, along with two men locked in the trunk, were Mexican nationals illegally present in the United States, the spokesman said.

That evening, agents at the Interstate 19 checkpoint selected a 2002 GMC SUV for a secondary inspection, and ultimately arrested the driver and a passenger, both U.S. citizens after learning that the other two occupants in the vehicle were in the country illegally, the spokesman said.
