Holt picked as new Pima Dems chair

A former University of Arizona biochemist has been picked as the chair of the Pima County Democratic Party. Jo M. Holt was voted in by party precinct committee members on Saturday.

Holt received 89 votes, with party activist Barbara Cain garnering 50 votes.

Holt, who has been the Democratic chair in Oro Valley's LD 11, ran two unsuccessful campaigns for the State Senate for that legislative district, against Al Melvin in 2012 and Steve Smith in 2014.

The election for a new county party head was spurred when Holt's predecessor, Cheryl Cage, abruptly resigned just weeks before the November elections. Party activist Pat Burns served as the interim chair for the Democrats.
