BP agents arrest 16, seize ton of pot
Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents arrested 16 suspected drug smugglers and seized more than a ton of marijuana, worth more than $1 million, in three incidents Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.
Ajo Station’s All-Terrain Vehicle Unit, which patrols the area near S.R. 86, discovered 526 pounds of marijuana worth $263,000. The drugs were taken to the Ajo Station for processing, the Border Patrol said.
Ajo agents using a mobile surveillance system detected 16 people believed to be smuggling drugs into the United States.
Agents and a canine unit, assisted by a Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine helicopter, apprehended the people and seized 20 bundles of marijuana.
The pot, which weighed more than 980 pounds, was worth $491,500, the Border Patrol said.
Casa Grande Station agents working in a remote area near Vamori. tracked footprints in the desert leading to 12 bundles of abandoned marijuana weighing 651 pounds and worth $325,500, the Border Patrol said.
