ADOT forum on I-10, crosstown parkway study

State transportation officials are holding a public hearing Wednesday night about potential improvements to Interstate 10 on the Southeast Side, and the possibility of upgrading Alvernon Way as a four-lane parkway between I-10 and Golf Links Road.

An upgraded connection between the interstate and State Route 210 (Barraza Aviation Parkway) would enhance access to Downtown, officials said.

"The study proposes improvements on about 11 miles of I-10 from I-19 to east of Kolb Road, along with improvements to SR 210 from Golf Links Road to a future connection with I-10 along Alvernon Way," said a news release from the Arizona Department of Transportation.

A public meeting about the proposed upgrades will be held Wednesday night at Lauffer Middle School, 5385 E. Littletown Rd., starting at 5:30 p.m.

The study includes an initial design concept report and draft environmental assessment that can be found at azdot.gov/i10sr210study. The purpose of the study is relieving congestion and improving traffic flow on I-10 and connecting the east end of SR 210 with I-10 to improve access to and from the Downtown area, officials said.

Proposed improvements being studied include:

  • Designating Alvernon Way as SR 210 from Golf Links Road to I-10 and providing four travel lanes in each direction
  • Adding a system interchange to provide access between SR 210 and I-10
  • Adding up to two lanes in each direction on I-10 between the I-10/I-19 interchange and Alvernon Way
  • Adding up to four lanes in each direction on I-10 between Alvernon Way and Kolb Road

The study team is also evaluating a no-build option, to serve as a comparison.

Members of the public are encouraged to review the study and provide input until Dec. 12, officials said. The website also lists locations where the report is available for review. There are several ways to provide comments on the draft environmental assessment:
