Jesse Lugo, John C. Scott broadcast annual 'Bike in a Box' appeal

Thursday and Friday, the seventh annual fundraiser to provide 500 under-privileged kids with bikes and helmets for Christmas will take place on the John C. Scott Show, on AM 1210. Organizer Jesse Lugo plans to raise $25,000 to support the effort.

The bikes will be given away at the Elks Lodge, 1800 N. Oracle Rd., on Dec. 12, Lugo said.

"Christmas is just a few weeks away, and with today's economy struggles and increase in family needs for the less privileged, your financial help is being requested," Lugo said in a press release.

Each year, radio host John C. Scott devotes days of his political talk program to urging Tucsonans to back the "Bike in a Box" project.

"Over the years, we've helped raise more than $350,000 and given away 6,000 bicycles," Scott said. "We've partnered with Lugo Charities because we think this such an important way to give back to the community and bring holiday smiles to so many kids."

"Everybody remembers their fist bicycle — it's an important part of growing up," he said. "Many of these children would never have a bike if not for this project. We're helping to create memories."

The show is broadcast on PowerTalk 1210, and streamed live, weekdays from 3-5 p.m.
