State and federal transportation leaders announced Friday the preferred route of a Tucson bypass, connecting Interstates 10 and 19 south of the the urban core.

Just don't start planning trips around it yet.

The Federal Highways Administration and the Arizona Department of Transportation have published their findings and a final decision on the “Final Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement.” This phase of the process, done to conform to the National Environmental Policy Act, has led to the selection of a 2,000-foot-wide corridor stretching a little more than 20 miles between I-19 and I-10 south of Tucson.

The Final Tier 1 EIS/Record of Decision is available on the study website. Hard copies are also available during normal business hours at the following locations:

This phase of the study followed a two and a half month public comment period between November of last year and January.

The plan is a concept, but the federal and state governments have made no financial commitments to the project. So construction won't begin any time soon.
