3/4 of uncounted Az ballots are in Maricopa County

There are more than 672,000 ballots left to be added to the count from Tuesday's election in Arizona, with more than 75 percent of them in Maricopa County, state officials said Wednesday. There are about 48,000 uncounted early and provisional ballots in Pima County, with 470,000 uncounted in the Phoenix area.

Some 627,725 remain to be tallied across the state, officials with the Secretary of State's Office said Wednesday afternoon.

To forestall allowing voters to cast multiple ballots, those who ask for early ballots and then go to the polls instead are issued provisional ballots, which take longer to process.

The early ballots left to be counted are mostly those mail-in ballots that were dropped at polling places on Election Day.

Preliminary local results were available at 8 p.m. Tuesday, but Pima County officials cautioned that because ballots cast Tuesday must be transported to a central location to be counted, a tally with a large number of Election Day votes wouldn't be released until about 3 a.m. Provisional ballots cast Tuesday will be verified and added to the count later in the week.
