24 weekend citations at Occupy Tucson

Tucson police arrested 24 Occupy Tucson demonstrators over the weekend, a department spokesman said.

Citations were given to nine protesters at Veinte de Agosto Park on Friday, six on Saturday, and nine on Sunday, said TPD Sgt. Matt Ronstadt.

Police began ticketing protesters around 10 p.m. each night, he said.

Veinte de Agosto Park, where Occupy protesters moved after being evicted last Thursday from Armory Park, closes at dusk and not 10:30 p.m. like most city parks.

There have been over 500 arrests since the protest began Oct. 15, according to police records.

Occupy Tucson protesters have been allowed to remain in the parks overnight after being cited for the misdemeanor offense of being in a park after closing time. Each night, police allow those who wish to leave to do so before making arrests and writing tickets.
