A 38-year-old Mexican man was sentenced Oct. 20 to 40 months in prison for attempting to illegally re-enter the United States, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Friday.

Bricio Contreras Vasquez, of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, was apprehended by Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents in late January. A records check revealed that he was convicted in 2004 in Sacramento for lewd acts on a child under 14 using force, violence, duress, menace and threat of bodily harm, the Border Patrol said.

Contreras was deported after serving a six-year sentence. His current case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. After serving his sentence he will be formally removed from the United States, the Border Patrol said.
