Police ID woman killed jaywalking across Oracle Rd.

A 34-year-old woman died Tuesday night after she was struck by a car while crossing North Oracle Road just north of Prince Road. Eugenia Calnimptewa was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

Calnimptewa was crossing the road, heading west, when she was hit in the median lane by a Honda Civic that had just turned from Prince and headed north. The woman was not in a crosswalk when she was hit, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman said.

Calnimptewa was taken to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Sgt. Kimberly Bay said, but died at the hospital.

"The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision and the driver showed no signs of impairment. No citations have been issued," Bay said.

Calnimptewa was the 10th pedestrian to be killed on Tucson's streets thus far this year. Last year, 12 had been killed by this date.
