BP agents find 9 people hidden in rental truck

Border Patrol agents found nine people hidden in the back of rental truck at the I-19 checkpoint last week, officials said.

Agents from the Nogales station stopped a Penske rental truck towing an older model Toyota pickup at the I-19 checkpoint on Oct. 9, and asked to search the vehicle.

The driver, a U.S. citizen, consented to the search. Agents opened the latched cargo door and found nine people suspected of being in the country illegally, the agency said.

Seven men and one woman were from Mexico, and one man was from Guatemala.

According to the agency, while the cargo door was unlocked, the people inside were trapped. "Unscrupulous smugglers have no regard for human life and often place illegal immigrants in precarious situations," the agency said.

All nine were taken into custody and processed according to agency guidelines.

The driver will be prosecuted for human smuggling.
