Three U.S. citizens arrested for smuggling meth, cocaine through Nogales this week

Three U.S. citizens were among six arrested by Customs and Border Protection agents in multiple incidents for attempting to smuggle $586,000 in "hard drugs," including heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine through Nogales-area ports, authorities said.

On Saturday, officers at the Mariposa crossing arrested a 53-year-old man from Rio Rico after a drug dog led officers to nearly 31 pounds of methamphetamine, worth an estimated $92,000, in the rear quarter panels of his Ford van, said CBP spokesman Rob Daniels, a CBP.

Later that day, another drug dog led CBP officers to nearly 21 pounds of methamphetamine worth nearly $65,000 hidden in the dashboard of a Toyota sedan. Officers seized the drugs and arrested the driver, a 25-year-old Mexican woman from Hermosillo, Sonora, said Daniels.

Meanwhile, a dog working at the nearby Dennis DeConcini port helped officers find nearly six pounds of heroin, worth around $100,000, sown into the lining of a backpack in a Kia Sedan. The driver, a 38-year-old Mexican woman, was arrested.

On Sunday, CBP officers at the Mariposa crossing arrested a 32-year-old Mexican man from Hermosillo, Sonora after they found 20 pounds of methamphetamine worth nearly $61,000 in his Chevy van.

Tuesday, CBP officers arrested a 58-year-old Tucson woman for attempting to smuggle nearly 16 pounds of methamphetamine, worth nearly $48,000. A drug dog found the drugs beneath the center console of her Nissan sedan during a secondary inspection, Daniels said.

On Wednesday, CBP officers at the DeCocini port arrested a 63-year-old man from Phoenix, after they found 12 pounds of cocaine and more than 28 pounds of methamphetamine worth a combined $220,000 in the front and rear quarter panels of his Volkswagen van.
