Election 2010
Record number request mail-in ballots
A record number of voters requested mail-in ballots for November's general election, the Pima County Recorder said Thursday.
More than 231,000 asked to receive an early ballot, F. Ann Rodriguez said in a news release. That's more than the number of mail-in ballots sent out for the 2008 election, she said.
Turn-out in presidential election years is generally greater than off-year elections, like this year's.
“Voters appear eager to take advantages of the opportunities available to cast their ballots early and ensure that they participate in this important process,” Rodriguez said.
The party breakdown of early ballot requests favors the Democrats thus far:
- Democrats: 96,160
- Republicans: 76,672
- independents & no party: 56,428
- Libertarians: 1,238
- Greens: 521
Thursday is the first day voters can cast a ballot in the election. Mail-in ballots will now be sent to those who have asked for them.
Voters have until Oct. 22 to request an early ballot. Ballots must be returned by mail early enough to be received by Nov. 2, or they may be dropped off at a polling place.
In-person early voting is also possible.
