Man arrested in hit-and-run death

A man was arrested Saturday night in the case of a man who died after being run over by a pickup truck last week while sitting at a bus stop. Ruben Aulbert Lemon, 33, faces felony hit-and-run charges in the death of 67-year-old Leonard Green, authorities said.

Green and a woman were sitting on a bus bench on East Pima Street near North Alvernon Way last Wednesday when a pickup truck veered across the street and hit them.

Around 10:45 a.m., a gray 2011 Nissan Titan was traveling southbound on Alvernon and made an eastbound turn onto Pima "at a high rate of speed," said a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

"The driver lost control... and struck the bus bench on the south side of the street," hitting Green, whose identity was released Monday by police, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay.

The male driver of the truck fled on foot, running east, Bay said.

Green and the woman who was struck were taken to Banner University Medical Center with serious injuries, she said. Green was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The woman was hospitalized, Bay said.

Within several hours after the incident Wednesday, TPD investigators identified and detained a male in the 100 block of E. Pastime Rd. after following leads on the driver, Bay said.

"Traffic detectives responded and conducted interviews and collected evidence but no arrest was made at that time," she said.

After further investigation, officers developed probable cause to arrest Lemon as the driver, and took him into custody Saturday night.

Lemon was taken to the Pima County jail and booked on one count of Hit and Run Involving a Death – a class 2 felony, Bay said.
