Sheriff: Boy dies of house fire injuries

A 12-year-old disabled boy injured in a house fire Sunday morning has died, authorities said.

Patrick Mathews, was unable to get to a safe location because of his disability, Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman said in a news release.

Investigators with the Sheriff's Department believe the fire was started by the boy’s younger sibling who was playing with matches, said Deputy Tracy Suitt. The investigation is ongoing.

Mathews was trapped when a fire started at his home in the 4600 block of West Julep Street, near North Oldfather and West Cortaro Farms roads, at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, said Suitt.

A deputy and an off-duty corrections officer who lives nearby pulled the boy from the home and he was rushed by Northwest Fire crews to a local trauma center, Suitt said. Mathews died Sunday night, he said.
